PoE Budget Planning for CCTV: Ports Are Not the Whole Story
Plan PoE switch capacity by camera power requirements, total budget, cable losses and future expansion.
Port count vs power budget
An 8-port PoE switch can have eight PoE ports but still have a total power budget that cannot supply eight high-power devices at their maximum draw.
Calculate the load
List each camera and its expected PoE demand. Include IR/night operation and any integrated heater, microphone, illuminator or other powered accessories where applicable.
Use practical headroom
Avoid running a PoE budget continuously at its absolute limit. Leave capacity for startup behavior, changing camera loads and future additions.
Cable and standards matter
Confirm that the switch and camera support a compatible PoE standard and that the cable installation is suitable. Longer or poor-quality runs can create power and link problems.
Field test
Check the switch's PoE status, per-port power draw and camera behavior during day and night. A camera that works in daylight but fails when IR activates can reveal a power-budget problem.
