CCTV Camera Placement: A Practical Guide for Better Coverage

Learn how to position CCTV cameras for entrances, corridors, perimeter areas, parking, offices and production spaces while avoiding common blind spots.

Entrances and gates

Consider the direction people approach from and the lighting behind them. If identification matters, a narrower view at the right distance is often more useful than an extremely wide scene.

Corridors and aisles

A long corridor can make people appear too small with a wide lens. Test the actual distance and choose the lens and mounting position around the required detail.

Perimeters and parking

Use overlapping views where one obstruction could create a blind spot. Check walls, trees, vehicles and seasonal changes that can alter the scene.

Height and angle

Higher mounting can reduce tampering but may reduce useful face detail. Avoid extreme downward angles when recognition is important.

Night-time validation

Test IR reflection, glare, motion blur and dark areas after sunset. Clean domes and lenses can also make a major difference to image quality.

Maintenance access

Plan how cameras will be cleaned, focused, replaced and serviced. A good location is secure but still maintainable.
